1.8.1 Acronyms and abbreviations not explained to users

Throughout the site, acronyms related to the system and process are used. It is recommended to avoid using acronyms (such as MAPPA or PPCS) without expanding and explaining them, since some users, such as those with cognitive disabilities may not easily identify what the term stands for.

WCAG criterion 3.1.4 states that users should be provided with the expanded form of abbreviations. While this issue fail against that criterion, the audit is being conducted against Level AA, so this won’t affect the system’s compliancy rating. However, this issue is still worth noting.

Acronyms, particularly ones that might not be immediately obvious to users of the system, should be expanded and explained to users before using them.
